History
Smith United Methodist Church is located in Roanoke Rapids, Halifax County, North Carolina adjacent to Interstate 95 just a short distance south of Virginia State line at Exits 173 and 171.
Smith United Methodist Church was first begun under a brush arbor on the property where the church now stands. The first church building was erected by 1797, and the worshipers sat on wooden benches. By 1919 more space was needed. Since Smith Church Road was being cut through, the original building was moved-with a team of mules helping the members-to its present location. The two-story education wing was added behind the sanctuary in 1947, and renovations including bricking were completed in 1949. The fellowship hall and children’s wing were completed later.
Smith UMC celebrated its Bicentennial in 1991 and entered its third century as an active, caring church family ministering to those around the world in the name of Jesus Christ.
